Ellsworth Fire Department is a combination department with 10 career members, (Chief, Deputy Chief, 1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, Fire Inspector, 4 engineer/firefighters) 1 part-time Administrative Assistant, and currently, 25 paid-on-call members. We provide first response for fire and non-EMS rescue services 24/7 for 7,000+ citizens of Ellsworth, covering 93 square miles. The Department also supports a technician level HazMat Decontamination Strike Team that covers all of Hancock & Washington County.
The Chief and Deputy Chief work Monday to Friday and are on-call weekends and evenings. The full-time employees are responsible for all daily station and equipment related duties, record keeping, training and maintenance. They also conduct inspections for lodging, multi-family apartments, assemblies, dining and entertainment facilities; perform plan reviews; site plan reviews for planning board projects; construction inspections; inspection of heating system installations and deliver public education programs.
The Ellsworth Fire Department provides first response for fire and non-EMS rescue services to the City of Ellsworth, one unorganized territory, automatic aid to four neighboring municipalities and mutual aid assistance to 28 Hancock County towns as requested through the Hancock County Mutual Aid Agreement. The department responded to 414 incidents in 2010. Our first response area (including automatic aid partners) has a resident population of over 14,000 people scattered over close to 300 square miles of land area. The department also supports a technician level HazMat/WMD Decontamination Strike Team (includes personnel from other area fire and law enforcement departments) providing service to all of Hancock and Washington counties (combined population of 87,400).
