A crackling campfire is one of the best parts of a Maine summer. Whether you’re relaxing at a campsite, gathering around a backyard fire pit, or enjoying an evening by the chiminea, a safe fire is an extinguished fire.
As we head into the long weekend, the City of Ellsworth encourages everyone to take a few extra minutes before calling it a night.
🔥 Don’t just watch the flames disappear and assume the fire is out.
To properly extinguish a fire:
✅ Pour water on the fire.
✅ Stir the ashes, embers, and wood.
✅ Pour more water.
✅ Stir again.
✅ Repeat until there is no heat, smoke, steam, or glowing remaining embers.
Remember that hot embers can remain hidden beneath the surface long after a fire appears to be out. The same is true for chimineas, outdoor fireplaces, and fire pits. A few extra minutes can help prevent a grass fire, brush fire, or worse.
