Winter is coming and the City of Ellsworth Public Works Department is preparing now. ❄️

The City has issued an Invitation to Bid for Winter Sand for the 2026–2027 winter season and is seeking qualified bidders to help ensure Public Works has a dependable supply of properly graded sand for snow and ice control operations.

Under the base bid, the City is requesting bids to produce 10,000 cubic yards of usable winter sand by excavating and mechanically screening material at the City Gravel Pit on outer Main Street. The successful bidder will provide the necessary screening equipment and labor, while the City will provide its loader and trucks to move the screened material and mix the sand with salt.

The bid also requests a separate unit price for on-call winter screening from January through April 2027.

An alternate allows bidders to provide pricing for 10,000 cubic yards of already-screened sand, either delivered by the contractor to the Public Works sand pile or loaded into City dump trucks at the source for transportation by the City.
