Ellsworth, ME – Ellsworth is thrilled to welcome Michael Otzwirk as our new Community Tree Steward. Working alongside the Arbor Commission, Michael will contribute to the city’s urban forestry efforts through research, tree planting, and maintaining the city’s tree inventory. Additionally, he will engage the community through education and outreach, playing a key role in improving and preserving Ellsworth’s green spaces.
Community Tree Steward is part of the Maine Conservation Corps program, designed to accomplish initiatives inspiring people and enhancing communities. Michael’s position is fully funded by AmeriCorps and was selected by the Arbor Commission who arranged the Community Tree Steward opportunity.
As part of his work, Michael will:
- Conduct city-wide research on right-of-way widths and develop a map of findings.
- Manage a city blog to keep residents informed about urban forestry initiatives, volunteer opportunities, and project progress.
- Undertake site assessment for the planting of 80+ trees.
- Contribute to the care and preparation of trees at the nursery on the Jordan Homestead Preserve.
- Update our GIS-based street tree inventory.
- Organize best practices in planting and long-term care workshops for city staff.
- Attend Arbor Commission meetings and collaborate with them in the development of a forestry management plan and an integrated pest management plan.
Michael grew up in suburban Chicago, working for a tree-service company where he learned the fundamentals of tree care, heavy machinery operation, and pruning techniques. He earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Physical Geography and Geology from Eastern Illinois University. His education prepared him to create maps with GIS software, conduct research and report writing, and he learned the influence of plants and trees on the geomorphology of an area.
His previous experience includes internships as a horticulturist at Whiteside Garden and an environmental intern with the Urban Butterfly Initiative, where he worked on plant inventories, community coordination, and explored the interconnectivity of local ecosystems.
After exploring potential positions across the country to apply his education and skills, Michael is eager to immerse himself in local government, gaining a deeper understanding of its laws, responsibilities, and community impact. He looks forward to refining his expertise in GIS mapping, tree identification, and volunteer coordination while making a meaningful contribution to Ellsworth.
“This position gives me the opportunity to plant trees across the city, engage with the community, and contribute to local conservation efforts. I’m also looking forward to exploring the city, checking out local businesses, and getting to know the people who call Ellsworth home.”
Michael relocated to Ellsworth with his wife, Grace, and their brown tabby cat, Boo. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, cycling, disc golf, juggling, Minecraft, and slacklining.
The City of Ellsworth invites everyone to follow Michael’s upcoming blog series for updates on urban forestry projects, progress reports, and ways to get involved.
Community members are also encouraged to attend Arbor Commission meetings, held monthly on the first Monday at 8:15 a.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber. The next meeting is scheduled for February 10, 2025, at 8:15 a.m.
