NOTICE from the Ellsworth Transfer Station and Recycling Center

Beginning February 1, 2019 the Ellsworth Recycling Center will begin taking ONLY THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:

  • US Corrugated Cardboard ( broken down )
  • Newspaper/Magazines/Catalogs/Advertising Flyers (not junk mail)
  • #1 and #2 plastic ( clean )
  • Aluminum/Tin Cans ( clean )

All other plastic, glass and paper items should be disposed of in your household trash.

How Ellsworth Recycles: Currently we are a member of the Maine Resource Recovery Association (MRRA) which helps us manage and find a market to sell our recyclables. Through MRRA we are able to sell the materials in a manner that helps pay for our recycling program. BUT currently there is a very limited demand for recycled items, here in the U.S. and Abroad. Should things change in the future the City would look into again accepting more types of recyclable items.

The Positive? Ellsworth sends our trash to the Penobscot Energy Recovery Company (PERC) a waste to energy company that turns our solid waste into electricity. Many of the items we will no longer be accepting are considered Class A fuels which creates more electricity at the facility. The PERC facility is an award winning facility that keeps our waste from being disposed of in a landfill.

We thank you for your patience at the recycling center as we implement these changes.

Reminder: Trash tickets $3 each and can be purchased at City Hall, the Transfer Station and participating stores (Ellsworth Freshies – High St, Friends and Family Marketplace, Hannaford, Shaw’s, Mikes Country Store, Josie’s and State St Market)
