With recent snowstorms blanketing the region, the Ellsworth Fire Department is calling on residents to help ensure the safety of their community by “adopting” a fire hydrant.
“Every second counts in a fire,” said Scott Guillerault, Fire Chief of the Ellsworth Fire Department. “Clearing snow from around fire hydrants can significantly reduce the time it takes for firefighters to access a critical water source.”
The department is asking residents to clear a 3-foot perimeter around fire hydrants near their homes or businesses. This includes removing snow from all sides of the hydrant and ensuring a clear path from the street.
“Our firefighters have been working hard this week to clear hydrants after the storms,” said Chief Guillerault. “But with so many hydrants in the city, we need the help of our community to keep them clear throughout the winter.”
Participants are encouraged to take photos with their cleared hydrants and share them with the Ellsworth Fire Department. Email them to Communications Director Maura Condon at mcondon@ellsworthmaine.gov. Please be aware we may share your photos on our website and city Facebook.
How to Adopt-a-Hydrant:
- Locate a fire hydrant near your home or business.
- Clear a 3-foot radius around the hydrant, removing snow from all sides.
- Ensure a clear path from the street to the hydrant.
- Consider clearing the hydrant after each snowfall throughout the remainder of the winter.
Safety Tips:
- Wear warm clothing and sturdy footwear when clearing snow.
- Be aware of traffic and avoid standing in the street.
- Do not use tools that could damage the hydrant.
