Simple put, property taxes cover most of the cost of municipal services and public schools in the city. From the State of Maine, municipal revenue sharing and general purpose aid assist with municipal services and schools respectively, but in most municipalities, more than 50% of the combined municipal and school budget comes from local property tax.
