Press Release
April 1, 2024
Ellsworth, ME, —In honor of the 54th celebration of Earth Day on April 20th the Ellsworth community will undertake volunteer clean-ups of roadsides and Card Brook, the City’s urban stream. On Saturday April 20, 2024 from 9 a.m. to noon the City of Ellsworth, in collaboration with Frenchman Bay Conservancy and the Ellsworth Moose Lodge, will be hosting the annual Card Brook Clean-up. The event will begin in the parking lot on the right-hand side of the Hannaford Supermarket in Ellsworth. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. in order to register, enter the raffle drawing, and receive further instruction. The clean-up will take place until noon, followed by a cook out at the Ellsworth Moose Lodge (47 Foster Street). Volunteers should come prepared by wearing sturdy footwear that can get wet and muddy. Trash bags, work gloves, hand sanitizer, snacks, and bottled water will be provided. A raffle will be held at the cook out for a chance for volunteers to win gift cards to local businesses. In the event of inclement weather, the clean-up will be held on the following Saturday, April 27, 2024. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. For more information or to pre-register contact Maura Condon at mcondon@ellsworthmaine.gov or 207-669-6616.
Beginning on Saturday April 20, 2024 the Ellsworth Green Action Team, an active part of Green Ellsworth, will host the seventh annual citywide Roadside Clean-up. The week-long event will run from Saturday, April 20 through Saturday, April 27. Interested participants can pick up free yellow trash bags and sign-up for road segments in advance at City Hall during regular business hours, beginning Monday April 15. All participants should wear boots, work gloves, and bright clothing. Yellow traffic safety vests are available for loan by contacting Mark Whiting. Vests can be returned to City Hall when finished. Trash bags can be left on the road shoulder in safe but visible locations. Please report the location and number of trash bags to the City Clerk’s Office at 207-667-6523 for disposal by Ellsworth Public Works. If you choose to pick up yellow trash bags and sign-up for road segments in advance, please do not leave trash bags on the side of the road until the beginning of the event on Saturday, April 20. Participants are encouraged to separate trash and redeemable bottles and cans into separate bags. Redeemable bottles and cans may be donated to the SPCA of Hancock County located at 141 Bar Harbor Road in Trenton.
It is recommended that participants do not fill the trash bags to their maximum capacity out of consideration for Ellsworth Public Works employees who need to handle them. Please remember to not pick up broken glass or other dangerous items.
