Through the Water Department, the City of Ellsworth closely monitors the water levels of Ellsworth Lakes. After consistent precipitation over the last several weeks, water levels in Branch Lake have returned to normal thanks to Mother Nature.
The overall combination of rainfall and the limited dam opening has replenished the lake water level to the summer target of 6.8 feet above the base of the dam. This height is on par with historic water level records.
To maintain the water level, the dam will be monitored and adjusted to the appropriate opening to continue to release excess water into the Branch Lake stream. Monitoring water levels and managing dams protects the lakes and watersheds. These actions are important for Branch Lake, as it is the City of Ellsworth’s drinking water reservoir, a valuable recreational asset, and home to an abundance of wildlife and sensitive ecosystems.
In the fall, the Branch Lake dam and water level will again be monitored and adjusted accordingly for the annual “fall drop” of water levels.
