Budget Breakdown for the FY 2024 Municipal School Budget Validation and Special Referendum Election

Maine’s constitution requires all towns to make public education available to their youth. Since 1828, the state has provided revenue to help the towns with financing public education. Currently, sources of public elementary & secondary education funding in Maine come largely from the State and municipality, with a smaller portion of Federal funds.

In the Fiscal Year 2024 budget by the Ellsworth School Department, the total amount approved by the City Council on May 8, 2023 is $26,908,373.76. This amount is the combination of state and local funds. The portion of local funds towards the FY 2024 is $13,469,270.78.
