As part of a state-wide consultation process, the Maine Climate Council will be offering a webinar presentation and consultation session specifically for Hancock County residents on August 19 at 5:00PM. It will be hosted by Green Ellsworth as preliminary to the release of the Ellsworth Green Plan for public review.

It is hosting this consultation because both the Climate Council process and the specifics of its strategies are closely aligned with the objectives of Ellsworth’s Green Plan, and the resulting state programs for funding and other community supports could significantly facilitate the realization of Green Plan objectives–and ultimately be transformational for Maine communities and individual citizens. Both the Climate Council and Green Ellsworth need engagement and input from a diversity of citizens.

In June of 2019, the Governor and the legislature created the Climate Council with a mandate to develop a four-year plan for Maine to reduce its carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and at least 80% by 2050. The Council has mobilized scientists, industry leaders, local and state officials and engaged citizens in this process. They have taken a broad approach encompassing the need for increased community and industry resiliency to the impacts of climate change, fostering the value of our natural resources and related industries, and prioritizing the welfare of all of our citizens and equity across communities and people. The Council’s six working group areas are concerned with:

1) Natural and Working Lands
2) Energy
3) Transportation
4) Community Resilience Planning, Public Health and Emergency Management
5) Buildings, Infrastructure and Housing
6) Coastal and Marine Issues

This webinar will be led by Brian Ambrette who is a Senior Climate Resilience Coordinator with the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future. He will provide an overview of the Council’s mandate and process as well as strategies developed by the working groups. A question and answer session will follow with representatives from the Natural and Working Lands, Energy and Transportation groups present to provide further input.
