Sometimes, a few photographs tell a story better than words ever could.

Earlier this week (Tuesday, July 7, 2026), community leaders, elected officials, members of Maine’s Judicial Branch, and project partners gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Hancock Judicial Center—a project that will serve Hancock County for generations to come.

These moments captured by City staff member Ebony reflect more than the ceremonial turn of a shovel. They capture excitement, collaboration, and the shared commitment that made this long-awaited project possible.

📸 Pictured breaking ground are (from left): State Rep. Russ White (R-Ellsworth), City Councilor Nancy Smith, Maine Sen. Nicole Grohoski (D-Hancock County), Maine Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Valerie Stanfill, City Council Chair Patrick Lyons, architect Mark Carter, and Kevin Bowman, President of Bowman Constructors.

From the smiles shared before the ceremony to the iconic “dirt toss,” these images mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Ellsworth and Hancock County. The Hancock Judicial Center will provide a modern, accessible home for the courts while strengthening Ellsworth’s role as the county seat and regional service center.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this milestone possible. We look forward to watching the project take shape in the months ahead.
