Harbor visitors were able to watch some engineering in action today as rocks were refilled into the wooden cribs at the marina. Rock cribs in a harbor are a type of engineering structure designed to protect docks and shorelines from the erosive forces of waves and currents. They are typically constructed using large rocks or stone-filled containers and for Ellsworth serve as an important measure to protect the dock against ice damage in the winter. This protection helps prevent damage to the dock structure and ensures its longevity.

This project was done in collaboration between Ellsworth Public Works and Seawood Services. The Public Works team loaded the rocks in large white bags onto the barge, Charles Bradley, then the barge crew transported the load to cribs. The bags were then lifted by the crane over the cribs and the bottom of the bags were cut from underneath allowing them to fill the structures.
