Ellsworth Fire Department Gains Authorization for Paramedic-Level Emergency Medical Services
April 8, 2025
ELLSWORTH, ME – The City of Ellsworth is pleased to announce that the Ellsworth Fire Department, which currently operates at the Basic EMT level permitted to Advanced EMT, has received authorization from the State of Maine to provide Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at the Paramedic level, effective Tuesday, April 8, 2025. This significant advancement will enhance the emergency medical care available to residents and visitors of Ellsworth.
This new authorization allows the Ellsworth Fire Department to provide a higher level of pre-hospital medical care. When a certified paramedic is available, the department will be equipped to administer advanced medical treatments, including administering medications, starting intravenous lines, and performing advanced airway management, at the scene of an emergency. The department will continue to provide care at the Basic EMT level as well.
The City of Ellsworth and the Ellsworth Fire Department remain committed to providing the highest quality of care and will maintain its strong collaborative working relationship with Northern Light Medical Transport. Northern Light Medical Transport will continue to be the primary provider for the treatment and transport of individuals requiring ambulance transport within the city.
The Ellsworth Fire Department also maintains the capability to provide ambulance transport services in situations where Northern Light Medical Transport is unavailable, ensuring continuous coverage for the community.
“This is a significant step forward for the Ellsworth Fire Department and the City of Ellsworth,” said Fire Chief Scott Guillerault. “Building upon our existing Basic EMT and Advanced EMT capabilities, the ability to provide paramedic-level care will allow our dedicated firefighters and EMS personnel to deliver critical medical interventions in those crucial first moments of an emergency, potentially improving outcomes for our community. We are proud to expand our services while continuing our strong partnership with Northern Light Medical Transport.”
This expanded EMS capability underscores the Ellsworth Fire Department’s ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of the Ellsworth community.
