The City of Ellsworth is taking a wonderful step to improve pedestrian safety in our downtown area, funding by the State … not the City.

Installation of these two cross walk lights will start Monday, May 18, 2026. By the end of May, two new flashing crosswalk indicator lights will be installed to help make crossing our busiest streets safer and more visible for everyone.

📍 Locations:

  • On Main Street near Franklin Street, close to 86 This (starting Monday, May 18, 2026)
  • Between the Ellsworth Public Library and the City Hall parking lot area

Each crosswalk will include a push-button system that activates flashing lights, alerting drivers that someone is crossing. We encourage those walking to use the button before crossing, and we ask drivers to stay alert and stop for pedestrians when lights are flashing.

With the warmer months ahead and increased activity throughout downtown, these improvements come at an important time as we prepare for the busy summer season.

We’re excited to bring these added safety features to Ellsworth and appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping keep our streets safe. Yearly, we could apply for additional lights. Got ideas on where they could go – let us know – cityhallwebcontact@ellsworthmaine.gov
