A Quick Reference Guide for Residents, Businesses, and Organizations
Why Does Ellsworth Have Sign Rules?
Ellsworth’s sign ordinance exists to keep everyone safe! These rules help reduce traffic accidents caused by visual obstruction, prevent hazards from signs overhanging public areas, and improve safety for both pedestrians and drivers. Most signs visible from public roadways require a permit from the Code Enforcement Officer before installation.
Signs That DON’T Need Permits
The following signs are exempt from permitting: Address signs (per Article 8), official government signs, ‘No Trespassing’ warnings, small safety signs in parking lots, vehicle decals (not parked solely for advertising), and memorial or historical markers from educational non-profits.
Construction Signs
Allowed during active construction only. Maximum total size: 32 sq. ft. May display architect, contractor, or lender info. Must be removed within 10 business days after completion and located on the property.
Real Estate Signs
Residential: Max two signs, each 6 sq. ft. Commercial: 32 sq. ft. total. Signs should be located on the property whenever possible and removed within 10 business days after sale or lease.
Political Signs
Maximum size: 32 sq. ft. May be erected up to six weeks before an election and must be removed within one week after. No permit required; may be placed within public right-of-way.
Special Event Signs
Temporary signs may be placed up to 30 days before and must be removed within 10 days after an event. Balloons, flags, and pennants are allowed, but must stay out of rights-of-way and not create traffic hazards.
Civic & Community Organization Signs
Nonprofits, schools, churches, and community groups may post temporary signs for events such as fundraisers, school fairs, or public initiatives. These are separate from commercial event signs.
Farm Product Signs
Farmers may use directional signs up to 8 sq. ft. within 5 miles of their property. Up to four signs allowed, advertising products sold on-site. Signs must be removed when the product is no longer available.
