As we continue to dig out from winter storms (and another coming in a few days …), the City of Ellsworth would like to remind residents and contractors that it is illegal in Maine to plow, blow, shovel, or otherwise place snow or slush onto or across any public road, right-of-way, or ditch.
Doing so creates a serious safety hazard for drivers, pedestrians, and our Public Works crews, and is considered an obstruction under state law (Title 29-A M.R.S. §2396). Violations may result in traffic fines, could range from $150 to $500, and could lead to liability for damages if an accident occurs.
We know this winter has delivered a lot of snow, and we understand how challenging it can be to find places to put it. That said, the roadway or sidewalk is never the right place.
Please help us help the crews who work long hours to keep Ellsworth’s roads and sidewalks safe and passable for everyone.
Thank you for doing your part—and for being a good neighbor. ❄️
