If you’ve visited Harbor Park this winter or tuned in to the live stream on our YouTube channel (  https://www.youtube.com/@CityofEllsworthMaine  ) you may have noticed bubbling near the pier and wondered what’s going on.

It may look a little unusual but rest assured, the bubbles are intentional and serve an important purpose.

The bubbling is created by a de-icer, an electric motor installed to prevent ice from forming around the pier during the colder months. The motor moves heavier salt water upward and creates a steady current, which helps keep the surrounding water from freezing.

By preventing ice buildup, the system helps protect the pier from potential damage caused by winter ice.

So, the next time you see those bubbles, you’ll know they’re hard at work helping keep the harbor, and our waterfront infrastructure, safe.
