The City of Ellsworth is pleased to launch a grant opportunity for downtown businesses and commercial property owners, aimed at revitalizing building exteriors and enhancing the charm of the downtown area. This program is funded through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and offers matching funds to support approved projects.
The Façade Improvement Grants provide a 3-to-1 match for private investments, with a maximum grant amount of $25,000 per project. The program is designed to help property owners restore the historic charm and aesthetic appeal of their buildings while contributing to the overall revitalization of downtown Ellsworth. Project activities may include historic façade improvements such as brick re-pointing, entrance enhancements, exterior lighting, signage, improved accessibility in conjunction with entrance upgrades, and more.
Grants are structured as a reimbursement program, meaning funds will be distributed once the approved work has been completed. Business and property owners within the designated downtown area are encouraged to apply (a map of the program area is available on the program webpage).
Applications will be reviewed by an advisory committee composed of city staff, business owners, experts, City Council members, and community organization representatives. Depending on the number of applications received, not all projects may be funded.
The application deadline is March 14, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. Interested businesses or property owners should review the map of the program area and program guidelines. These materials including the application, are available at https://www.ellsworthmaine.gov/facade/.
The grant program is managed and administered by the City of Ellsworth. For additional questions or to schedule a meeting for more details, contact the Program Administrators at facadeprogram@ellsworthmaine.gov
