If you spot some unfamiliar equipment (including cameras) at a few intersections around Ellsworth this week, don’t worry … it’s there to help plan for the future.

The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) is conducting turning movement and traffic counts at several intersections throughout the City as part of traffic modeling efforts for the Main Street Union River Bridge project.

The temporary equipment records vehicle turning movements, pedestrian activity, and, at one location, bicycle traffic to help engineers better understand how people move through these intersections today and plan for future improvements.

Study locations include:

  • Bangor Road / Christian Ridge Road
  • Bucksport Road / Christian Ridge Road
  • Court Street / Surry Road
  • Surry Road / Maple Street
  • Bucksport Road / Pleasant Street
  • Bucksport Road / Court Street

In addition, MaineDOT will conduct a five-day bicycle and pedestrian study on the Main Street Bridge using similar equipment.

Motorists and pedestrians may notice the temporary devices or field staff working nearby. No action is required from the public, and traffic should not be affected.

The information collected will help MaineDOT evaluate current traffic conditions and support planning and design for the proposed Main Street Union River Bridge project.

Thank you for your patience as this important data is collected.

What is this device? It’s temporary traffic-counting equipment installed by MaineDOT to collect traffic, pedestrian, and bicycle data for future planning of the Main Street Bridge project.
