Good news, Ellsworth — Bridge Hill is reopening!
The roadway is expected to be fully open to traffic by 5 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2026, which means the morning commute can return to normal and the traffic diversion will come to an end.
It’s been quite a road getting here.
Following the water main break, crews first worked through the night to repair the City’s water system. The break also caused significant damage beneath the roadway, requiring damaged pavement to be removed, the gravel base to be repaired and compacted, and the road to be repaved before it could safely reopen.

We know this closure caused significant disruption for residents, businesses and everyone who travels through this area. Thank you for your patience, flexibility and all those extra miles traveled while the detour was in place.
And an especially big thank you goes to the City crews, MaineDOT, and contractor crews who worked hard to get us to this point.
There were a lot of moving pieces involved in repairing the water system and restoring the roadway safely, and we are grateful to everyone who put in the long hours to get Bridge Hill back open.
By 5 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, the road will be open and the morning commute will be back to normal.
