Apply now for Homestead Exemption and/or Veteran Exemption before April 1, 2026 for $500 Property Tax Relief

There are two types of exemptions available to Maine residents. The HOMESTEAD Exemption and the VETERAN Exemption. April 1, 2026 is the annual application deadline date.

The HOMESTEAD Exemption is available to all homeowners with a primary residence in Maine. This can save you about $400 in Ellsworth.

The VETERAN Exemption is for seniors age 62 or older. To qualify for this exemption, you must provide proof of service during a federally recognized war period. This can save you about $100 a year.

“In Ellsworth, taxpayers receiving approval for both exemptions would get about $500 off their tax bill every year,” says Larry Gardner, Ellsworth City Assessor. “Please tell your friends and neighbors about these exemptions.”

Don’t procrastinate. Apply now! Contact your municipal Assessing office before April 1, 2026.
